Alzheimer's Care: Ten Absolutes to Simplify Tasks and Create Positive Interactions Part II
Thursday, September 26, 2024
In the journey of Alzheimer’s & Dementia care, applying thoughtful strategies can make a world of difference. Continuing from our previous discussion, let’s explore the next five absolutes that can significantly enhance interactions and simplify daily tasks, particularly for those with Alzheimer’s.
When it comes to communication, avoid saying “I told you” repeatedly. Instead, focus on gently repeating or regrouping information. For example, instead of expressing frustration over a repeated question, calmly explain, “I understand you want to go to the bank, but it’s closed today. We’ll go tomorrow when it opens.” Another essential approach is to focus on what individuals can do rather than what they can’t. Instead of saying, “You can’t wear two shirts,” offer alternatives by saying, “Try this one on; it looks nice!” or “Let’s find an umbrella together if it’s raining.” This positive reinforcement helps maintain their dignity and encourages engagement.
Commands and demands can be stressful, so replace them with gentle requests and modeling. Instead of insisting, “You need to change your clothes now,” try saying, “Look at this pretty outfit. Let’s sit here together while we pick out something nice for you to wear.” This method promotes cooperation and reduces anxiety.
Condescending remarks can be discouraging, so focus on encouragement and praise. If someone struggles with taking medication, instead of showing frustration, acknowledge their effort: “You did a great job trying to take your medicine today. Let’s see if we can make it a bit easier together.” Lastly, instead of forcing actions, use reinforcement. Rather than demanding, “You need to take a bath now,” gently guide the person with positive reinforcement: “I know it’s time for a bath, and I’m here to help you. Let’s make it a pleasant experience, maybe with some nice, warm water and a relaxing environment.”
